The meaning and use of JASO MA and JASO MB lubricant standards for motorcycles

When we go to buy oil or change the oil, we often see on the oil bottle with the symbols JASO MA, MB. So what do those symbols mean, then this article will talk about some of these standards. Hope it will help you in choosing the right oil for your motorbike.

Understanding customer psychology, Elzer Lubricant Inc USA will share knowledge about the standard that is considered the first essential when choosing to buy motor oil, which is JASO in the article below. Let’s follow along!

1. WHAT IS THE JASO STANDARD? WHY DO PEOPLE WHO CHANGE MOTORCYCLE OIL NEED TO KNOW?

JASO is an acronym for Japanese Automotive Standards Organization.

JASO standards are established in correspondence with API (American Petroleum Institute) standards to match the characteristics of modern Japanese engines. Furthermore, API standards have been established only for automotive engine oils but not for motorcycles. Therefore, JASO has drafted and issued separate standards for 4-stroke and 2-stroke motorcycle engine oils.

2. JASO STANDARD FOR 2-STROKE AND 4-STROKE MOTORCYCLE ENGINES

2.1 JASO standard for 4-stroke motorcycle engines (4T)

In 1998, the JASO T903 standard was issued for 4-stroke motorcycle engine oils specifying the appropriate performance requirements for different types of motorcycle engines.

JASO T903 was adjusted in 2016 to classify 4T motorcycle lubricants into 4 grades JASO MA, JASO MA1, JASO MA2 and JASO MB. This classification is based on the results of the clutch system friction test according to the JASO T903:2016 method.

Elzer Motor Oil 4T – Motorcycle engine oil meets JASO MA2 and JASO MB standards.

What does JASO MA, MA2 and JASO MB for 4-stroke motorcycle engine oil mean?

JASO MA is the base standard for engine oils that share the same engine, transmission and clutch lubricants.

This oil has no additives to reduce friction, designed to meet the requirements of working with wet clutches in digital cars such as Honda Wave, Dream, Winner, Yamaha Exciter, Suzuki Raider, …

JASO MA includes both JASO MA1 and JASO MA2: MA1 is the lower standard, MA2 is the higher standard for modern motorcycles and is compatible with emissions catalysts. JASO MA2 is especially suitable for powerful sports clutches.

JASO MB is the standard that meets the requirements of working with a dry clutch (dry clutch in scooters and cars), used for scooters such as Honda Vision, Lead, SH, Suzuki Impulse, Yamaha Grande, Vespa, …

The JASO classification is based on the results of the clutch friction test according to the JASO T903:2016 method with the following 3 friction indexes:

Dynamic Friction Characteristic Index (DFI) evaluates the feeling of clutch operation and the ability to transmit power when accelerating.
The Static Friction Characteristic Index (SFI) evaluates the clutch’s ability to prevent slippage under heavy loads.
Stop Time Index (STI): evaluates how fast or slow the clutch is acting
The above-mentioned friction indexes are evaluated by comparison with two selected reference oils and the data obtained should be within the standard limits as follows:

In addition to the above friction index limits, 4-stroke motorcycle engine oil must also meet the minimum performance standard of API SG and other physical and chemical properties according to JASO T903:2016 to ensure operation. good with modern 4-stroke motorcycle engines.

2.2 JASO standard for 2-stroke motorcycle engines

Standard Uses
JASO FA The base oil grade specifies the lubricating, cleaning, starting torque, exhaust, and exhaust system clogging capabilities.
JASO FB Improved lubricating, cleaning, exhaust smoke and exhaust system blocking capabilities compared to FA.
JASO FC Lubrication and starting torque requirements are the same as those of the FB, but the cleaning, exhaust and clogging ability of the exhaust system are much better than that of the FB.
JASO FD Similar to FC with much higher cleaning requirements.

Japanese motorcycle manufacturers found the limits required by the API TC 2-stroke engine oil standard to be too lax. Oils that meet API TC standards still produce excessive smoke.

Therefore, in 1994, JASO issued the JASO M345 2-stroke engine oil standard with 3 performance levels FA, FB, FC. In 2004, the FD level was added and the FA level was withdrawn.

During the mid-1990s, the JASO specification could not meet the requirements of modern European 2-stroke engines. The ISO standards listed below have been developed to address this shortcoming specifically in the table below.

Standard                                            Features
ISO-L-EGB      Same requirements as JASO FB + piston cleanliness test.
ISO-L-EGC      Same requirements as JASO FC + piston cleanliness test.
ISO-L-EGD      Same requirements as JASO FD + piston cleanliness test + cleaning efficiency

2T oil is mixed with gasoline in a suitable ratio and enters the combustion chamber to lubricate the cylinders, pistons, ring bearings, thus being burned with the fuel. It is a consumable type of lubrication, so the oil needs to be replenished continuously.

2T lubricant needs to be liquid to easily mix with gasoline (so in 2T oil composition there is a solvent). 2T oil also has to burn clean to create less residue to contaminate the bougi, pistons, rings and block the exhaust pipe (pipe), so the additives used for 2T oil are also different from 4T oil.

EPILOGUE :

So we have finished understanding JASO – the most important standard of motorcycle lubricants. Hopefully, after the article that Elzer Lubricant Inc USA shared, everyone can distinguish which type is for scooters, or digital cars, which is 2-stroke, or 4-stroke… From there, you can choose exactly which oil. suitable for your car engine.
